Leopard Gecko Heat Pad

A so-called Leopard gecko heat pad, or any other under tank heating equipment like heat strips are a piece of equipment that is used to heat these lizards from the bottom. It usually comes in the form of a high resistance wire element coated with a foil-type material.

When additional heating is necessary, Leopard gecko heat pads make excellent accessories. This is not just because of their low heat output, but also because of their ease of use and cheap prices. They are also easy to maintain and are very reliable.

The heat pad or heat strip should be mounted under an area of non-movable substrate, one the one side of the enclosure. To prevent overheating it can be folded up not to cover more than about a third of the total floor space. The perfect temperature range for Leopard geckos, in the middle of the cage, going slightly warmer towards the heat pad and colder towards the other is about 25 - 32 ºC / 77 - 90 ºF.

Leopard Gecko Crickets

Successful Leopard gecko keeping only became possible after the commercialisation of feeder crickets. Today it is possible to go and buy a tub of crickets at almost any reptile friendly pet shop. With the correct information, it is also possible to breed your own Leopard gecko crickets, cheaply and free.

Commercial Leopard gecko crickets contain all the right proportions of proteins, carbohydrates, fats to sustain these lizards, on their own, or in combination with other Leopard gecko foods. Crickets are also easy to gut load and dust to increase their nutritional value even more.

The main feeder crickets that are available are the European house cricket (Acheta domestica), They are the correct size to feed juvenile to adult Leopard geckos. These crickets are also easy to keep, breed and handle.

Leopard gecko crickets are best served alive. Your Leopard gecko will love to hunt them down, one by one, until it is full. Make sure to always remove excess crickets after the feeding is over. Leopard geckos should be fed at least once a day. As was already mentioned, properly prepared feeder crickets can be fed as the only foodstuff or in combination with other insects such as mealworms.

Leopard Gecko Trevo Worms

Leopard gecko Trevo worms, also called Butter worms, are the soft bodies larvae of the Chilean moth (Chilecomadia moorei). Trevo worms are naturally high in fat and calcium. They are said to have more than double the calcium content of any other feeder insect!

Because of their fats tails, Leopard geckos can eat high volumes of Trevo worms without problems. Leopard geckos tend to store this fat in their tails, mainly utilizing the proteins for growth and body function. Fresh Leopard gecko Trevo worms can be fed in a shallow, escape proof dish with calcium supplementation to stimulate its intake. Uneaten Leopard gecko mealworms should be removed and replaced on a daily basis.

Their sizes (2 - 3.8 cm / ¾ - 1½ " in length) makes them perfect to feed to adult Leopard geckos. Trevo worms are perfect to improve poor body condition scores of emaciated individuals. It can be fed in larger amount to gravid Leopard gecko females. Although mealworms are a relative good food source for Leopard geckos, it is important not to feed them as the only protein source. Other higher protein feeder insects such as crickets and/or cockroaches should make out the bulk of the Leopard gecko food.
